Gamharia, August 10, 2024 – In a heartfelt celebration of culture, diversity and heritage, XITE Gamharia marked the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples with a vibrant program, dedicated to honoring the unique traditions, values and contributions of Jharkhand’s indigenous communities. The event was orchestrated by the Department of English, with the Cultural Club, Sarjan (Literary Club) and the Branding & Communication Department of XITE Gamharia joining hands to bring this cultural festivity to life.
The day commenced with the Invocation of Ancestors, a solemn ritual underscoring the profound respect indigenous cultures hold for their roots and ancestors. This set the tone for the event, which aimed to deepen understanding and foster appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of Jharkhand’s indigenous communities. Enock Topno, in his Introductory Speech, emphasized the urgency and significance of preserving indigenous traditions, particularly in Jharkhand, where tribal culture is central to the state’s identity. His words were followed by Fr. Ritesh Edwin Dungdung, who, in his warm Welcome Address, highlighted XITE’s dedication to promoting cultural heritage and fostering inclusivity within the institution.
Capturing Indigenous Wisdom through Storytelling and Film
Sarjan – The Literary Club took the stage next, presenting a captivating storytelling session. The tales reflected the moral values, customs and deep-rooted wisdom of Jharkhand’s indigenous communities, offering the audience valuable insights into the lessons these traditions continue to impart today. The session was followed by a movie screening that depicted the struggles and triumphs of indigenous peoples, providing a thought-provoking narrative on their resilience and spirit.
Music, Culture and Celebration
One of the event’s highlights was the musical performances by Manual, which resonated deeply with attendees, adding a soulful touch to the day’s celebrations. Indigenous rhythms and melodies filled the air, creating a vibrant atmosphere that echoed the rich cultural legacy of Jharkhand’s tribes.
The Ramp Walk was the standout feature of the day, as students creatively represented various aspects of Jharkhand’s tribal culture. From showcasing traditional Santhali musical instruments to depicting the sacred rituals of Jaher and the agricultural practices that sustain the indigenous way of life, the students brought tribal traditions to life with vivid and imaginative presentations. Gopal, a 1st-year BA Economics student, was awarded first prize for his exceptional portrayal of the sacred worship practices of Jaher.
Culmination with Prize Distribution and Indigenous Traditions
The day concluded with the Prize Distribution ceremony, celebrating the efforts of all participants. Prof. Akinchan Xaxa offered a thoughtful Vote of Thanks, expressing gratitude to everyone who made the event possible.
The celebration then moved to the ground floor, where attendees enjoyed traditional indigenous cuisines at the food stalls, offering an authentic taste of Jharkhand’s culinary heritage. The event came to a joyful close with the Chain Dance, a traditional dance that symbolizes unity and community. Faculty, students and staff joined together in this lively expression of cultural pride and togetherness.
Special Guests and Community Participation
The event was graced by the presence of Suraj Gilua and Nitish Kumar from Tata Steel Foundation, who appreciated the celebration’s role in promoting understanding and respect for indigenous cultures. The event saw full participation from students, faculty and non-teaching staff, turning it into a true community celebration of Jharkhand’s indigenous heritage.
