Addiction
-
As a third-year BBA student , my academic journey has not only equipped me with
business acumen but has also deepened my understanding of societal issues, particularly
addiction. This complex phenomenon affects millions and poses significant challenges,
especially among the youth. Through my studies and research, I have learned that
addiction is not merely a personal struggle; it is a multifaceted issue that intertwines with
social, economic, and psychological factors.
Addiction can be broadly categorized into substance addiction—such as alcohol, drugs,
and tobacco—and behavioral addiction, which includes compulsive behaviors like
gambling and excessive internet use.
One of the key insights I have gained is that the roots of addiction often lie in various
underlying causes. Peer pressure is particularly influential among young people, who may
resort to substance use to fit in or cope with academic stress. Additionally, mental health
issues such as anxiety and depression frequently accompany addiction, creating a vicious
cycle that is difficult to break.
The impact of addiction extends beyond individual health. It affects families,
communities, and society at large. Families often bear the brunt of emotional and financial
strain due to a loved one's addiction. Communities face increased crime rates and social
instability as addiction-related issues escalate. Furthermore, the stigma surrounding
addiction prevents many from seeking help, perpetuating the cycle of dependency.
To address this pressing issue, initiatives like the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan have been
launched by the Indian government. This program aims to raise awareness about substance
abuse and promote healthier lifestyles among youth through community engagement and
support systems. Such efforts are crucial in fostering an environment where individuals
feel safe to seek help without fear of judgment.
