Shaping Minds: The Transformative Power of Mentorship in Education
A great teacher is one who consistently motivates students to strive for their best, encouraging
perseverance and resilience. Teachers play a crucial role in our lives, shaping us with daily
lessons and values that influence every decision we make. I was fortunate to have encountered
such a transformative figure in my academic journey—my esteemed professor, Dr. Sriparna
Ghosh.
Dr. Ghosh was not merely an educator; she became my role model and a wellspring of
inspiration. Her unwavering belief in my potential, especially during moments when I doubted
myself, propelled me toward achievements I had never imagined possible.
As a student, I struggled with self-confidence, often retreating into silence during classroom
discussions and abandoning tasks that seemed insurmountable. However, Dr. Ghosh never
relinquished her faith in me. During my undergraduate years, she encouraged me to participate
in a college-level extempore competition. Despite my apprehension, limited preparation time,
and an overwhelming sense of insecurity, she stood by me, urging me to embrace the
challenge. Although my initial attempt was less than successful, her steadfast support and
constructive feedback led me to confront my fears.
The following year, driven by her encouragement, I participated in an inter-college youth
competition. This time, I represented my institution with distinction, securing three prizes
across different categories. Witnessing the tears of joy in Dr. Ghosh’s eyes as I received those
accolades remains one of the most profound experiences of my life. It was then that I truly
understood the depth of a teacher's dedication—a commitment to nurture, empower, and
prepare students to face the world with strength and compassion.
Dr. Ghosh's mentorship extended beyond academic challenges. She offered me invaluable
advice during times of need. When I lacked resources for my studies, she reminded me that the
library was always available to me. Her words, "Pencils are better than pens because they
allow you to erase and improve," became a guiding principle in my journey toward self-
improvement.
Her belief that "everyone in this world has only 24 hours in a day; how you utilize that time is
up to you" inspired me to resume my academic pursuits after a six-year hiatus. Balancing
familial responsibilities and professional obligations, I persevered, earning two master’s
degrees and currently pursuing my doctoral studies.
Now, as a proud professor at XITE, I strive to embody the qualities Dr. Ghosh instilled in me. I
aim to inspire my students with the same compassion, encouragement, and dedication that she
offered me, ensuring that they, too, can surpass their limits and achieve greatness.
